MARCH 1997
ON THE CHUCK WAGON
Well, by the time you read this, DGN 97-98, Dr. Ray Den Adel will have returned from his district governor's training in Anaheim, California with all sorts of new ideas for Rotary. This begins my descent to pastdistrictgovernorship (I think that is a new word). Ray sent me a postcard the other day with President Elect Glenn Kinross' new theme for 97-98, Show Rotary Cares. If space permits, I will scan the new logo into this newsletter. If not, you will just have to wait until the PETS/District Assembly on April 5.
Plans for the District Conference on April 25-27 are shaping up fast. I have shared a tentative program for that event with district committee chairs and gotten favorable responses. All clubs and committees will get a mailing from me shortly asking, among other things, if you would like to have any exhibit space for displays at the conference. The main lobby in Hickory Grove Civic Center is huge, and we will try to accommodate as many as possible.
The best laid plans of mice and men (so it is said) oft go astray. Therefor, my original plan to have the club presidents bring their ceremonial bricks with them to the conference for a building project has had to be scrubbed. I found in traveling around to various clubs that many of the bricks themselves have gone astray, and the club presidents haven't a clue as to their whereabouts. I doubt that we could build the display I had in mind with so many bricks missing. Anyway, it was a good idea while it lasted.
The brick has been a magnificent symbol of President Giay's theme, Build the Future with Action and Vision, however, and shouldn't be forgotten.
President Giay has blessed this district with the assignment of the highest ranking R.I. official ever to serve as the R.I. President's Official Representative to our District 6420 Conference. Mike Kutsuris, a past R.I. Director 1981-84, is from Oakland, California. Mike served on the board under Presidents, Stanley McCaffrey and Hiroji Mukasa.
I have asked PDG Len Carmichael and his partner Marge to serve as aides to Mike and his partner Evelyn while they are visiting us in Rochelle. Len was elected District Governor in the same year that Mike came to the board.
Mike will have many interesting things to share with us at the conference. He has been heavily involved in the establishment of new Rotary Clubs in Siberia and is scheduled to do a program on that subject. Also, with the nomination of Jim Lacy to be President of R.I. in 1998-99, Mike has been asked to take over from Jim as the General Chairman of the Indianapolis R.I. Convention in 1998.
TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE
WHAT DO YOU MEAN? WHAT IS A PRID?
by Governor Chuck
As we travel the world of Rotary, we find the frequent use of letters of the alphabet as abbreviations of programs, titles, etc. Even having been around Rotary as long as I have, I sometimes wonder what some of them are. We have a new one at our District Conference this year (PRID), so I thought I would list some of the more common ones for the education of your members. Being a past educator, like my predecessor, Ben, there will be a test on these sometime in the future, probably at the conference. Anyway, here goes:
DG - District Governor (me) (These are often followed
PDG - Past District Governor (Ben) by the year served.)
DGN - District Governor Nominee (Ray)
DGND - District Governor Nominee Designate (Mel)
RIP - Rotary International President (Luis Giay)
RIPE - Rotary International President Elect (Glenn Kinross)
PRIP - Past Rotary International President (Herb Brown)
RID - Rotary International Director (Gary Romp)
RIDE - Rotary International Director Elect (Bob Brickman)
PRID - Past Rotary International Director (Mike Kutsuris)
RF - Rotary Foundation of Rotary International
PHF - Paul Harris Fellow
PHSM - Paul Harris Sustaining Member
GSE - Group Study Exchange
WCS - World Community Service
YEO - Youth Exchange Officer
RITS - Rotary International Travel Service
RIBI - Rotary International in Britain and Ireland
RYLA - Rotary Youth Leadership Awards
While there are others, these are some of the most common. Have fun testing your members.
DISTRICT COMPUTER BULLETIN BOARD (BBS)
UNDERGOES CHANGES
Our old BBS with the (800) phone number is no more. It is being replaced by an Internet WEB site which also has a new SYSOP (Systems Operator) in the person of Dave Tybor of the Henry Rotary Club. Dave is a computer nerd who helped Jim Gray set up our first BBS last summer. He operates a BBS and WEB sites from his auto dealership in Henry. When Jim Gray had to resign as SYSOP for health reasons, Dave agreed to take over our operation and get us on the Internet as most Rotary Districts are doing. Our former stand alone BBS unfortunately got little use, and failed to live up to its expectations. In his travels, Governor Chuck found much more interest in an Internet site than the stand alone among district Rotarians and looked at several other district WEB sites before making this move.
Our new WEB site is presently under development, but those of you with Internet access might want to visit it to see what is happening. Dave Tybor has exciting plans for the new site, but it will take a month or two to get everything together. You should be able to see the new Governor's Monthly Newsletter on line long before you get it in the mail. We should eventually have all of the Governor's newsletters up there, along with a District Calendar of Events, bios of officers, e-mail, etc.
Now for the most important information, the Internet Address of our new WEB site. It is as follows:

STERLING CLUB CELEBRATES 75 YEARS
OF SERVICE TO ROTARY
The Sterling Rotary Club will celebrate its 75 years as a member of Rotary International on Tuesday, April 22. A gala celebration is being planned at the Rock River Country Club in Rock Falls with a social hour at 6:00 P.M. followed by dinner at 7:00. You will be getting more information on this event from the Sterling Club.
MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
IT'S EVERY ROTARIAN'S JOB
While some clubs are achieving much success in this area and already qualify for the $1,000 Engel Challenge drawing, others are losing membership. As you can see from reading the chart on the back page of this newsletter, our district is down in membership from a year ago. This is a problem that just doesn't go away easily.
If your club is one of those that is losing net membership, NOW is the time to get to work and do something about it.. What can you do? A number of things. Clubs that are successful in this area will gladly share their programs for membership development with you. By now every club in the district should have been contacted by a member of the Membership Development Committee with a request to give a program on this subject to your club. If you haven't been contacted, call the chair, Nel Pitelka, and she will see to it that you get help.
No, we can't come to your club and get new members for you, but we can give you the tools to have a successful membership campaign. Membership is your job and the job of every Rotarian in every club. Let's make it happen!
