SEPTEMBER 1996
ON THE CHUCK WAGON
Whew! Forty club visits in ten weeks. I didn't think I could do that, but apparently PDG Ben did, since he was the one who set up my schedule. Four clubs have now sung the theme song, "Build the Future with Action and Vision." More of you should try it, its easy. I am seeing that less and less clubs are singing anymore other than perhaps a patriotic song at the beginning of the meeting. Of course the fact that Rotary International no longer publishes a song book doesn't help. If you still have old song books, don't throw them out. Copy the Rotary songs, since that is the only way you will be able to preserve them. The International Fellowship of Singing Rotarians provides a list of standard song books that you can get from the music stores, but they don't contain the Rotary songs.
I had the surprise of my life as District Governor a couple of weeks ago in Granville. I was in the middle of my address to the club and had arrived at the portion of that speech where I am promoting The Rotary Foundation and especially the Benefactor program. I had left some Benefactor pledge cards with the president and secretary during our preliminary meeting. I was talking away, when a Rotarian got up from his seat and advanced toward the head table. I thought he probably had had enough of me and was headed for the exit. Was I wrong. He came right to the podium and handed me a fully filled out Benefactor card and a check for $1,000. I was so astonished that I almost was unable to finish my speech. What a great example to set for that club, which, prior to that moment, had no Benefactors. I am sure there will be more for that is a club that gets things done once they get a direction.
The annual Zone Institute for Rotary International Zones 27 and 28 was held at the Skokie North Shore Hilton at the end of last month, and it was certainly the great experience we all expected. Many of our colleagues took the tour to One Rotary Center in Evanston which was offered one afternoon. Jane and I didn't go since we had been there Just two months before. Jane took a picture of me at that time shaking the hand of Paul Harris (statue) outside the door of his recreated office. While everyone else was on the tour I worked on my laptop computer trying to catch up on my reports.
The meetings were excellent. We learned more about the Permanent Fund of the Rotary Foundation, World Community Service projects, the new proposed district structure, and many other Rotary topics. We came away quite impressed with the 1997-98 President Elect of Rotary International, Glen Kinross of Australia. Many of the meals featured excellent speakers. DGN 97-98, Ray Den Adel received his initial training prior to our arrival on Wednesday, and he is already in the process of planning for his year as your governor.
When Jane and I were in Anaheim last February for our District Governor training, I bought my official brick red governor's coat two sizes too large. It is now only one size too large. I think I had better get Off the Chuck Wagon.
NEEDED - ONE GOOD PDG TO REPRESENT DISTRICT
It is hard to believe but the next Council on Legislation is almost upon us. District Governors have been asked to issue the call for nominations for District Representative to the 1998 Council on Legislation which has been tentatively scheduled to be held in Delhi, India January 12-16, 1998.
Candidates must be Past District Governors, and they should not serve in this capacity more than twice in succession. The formal election of the District 6420 representative will take place at the District Conference which will take place in Rochelle, April 25-27, 1997. We will elect at that time one representative and one alternate.
This district was last served in this capacity by PDG Dick Roeing from Sterling, who attended the 1995 Council held in Caracas.
Full information about the qualifications and duties of the representative and the procedures for nomination and election can be found in the R.I. Bylaws, sections 8.010.1., 8.020., 8.030., 8.050., 8.060., and 8.070.
One dollar will be added to the 1997-98 R.I. per capita dues to provide for the representatives' travel, lodging, and meal expenses for this meeting.
Proposed legislation for consideration by this council must be received by the General Secretary of R. I. by May 1, 1997 in order to be considered. Those wishing to propose legislation should contact the District Governor for information and forms.

CLUBS INVITED TO SUPPORT
WORLD COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS
In the Public Relations insert in this month's newsletter you will find a listing of the World Community Service projects which are being promoted by our district this year. We urge you to set aside some money in your club budget for this purpose. Checks in support of these projects should be made out to Rotary International District 6420 and sent to District Secretary-Treasurer, Bob Smith. Please note which of the projects you wish your contributed funds to go for or whether you will allow the District W.C.S. Committee to use its discretion in assigning them to a project.
A number of clubs are also still supporting the Kids Alive project, although that is no longer an official Rotary W.C.S. project. The district secretary-treasurer will continue to process funds for Kids Alive. The Bosnian Student project is no longer a district project. Please do not send funds to the district for that purpose.
We voted at the Zone Institute to allow R. I. Director, Gary Romp to pursue possible additional well projects. If he is successful in that venture, we may have additional projects available late in the Rotary year. It takes considerable time for W.C.S. projects to get through the approval process for matching grants.
FOUNDATION TRUSTEES DO IT AGAIN
The trustees of the Rotary Foundation have amended their decision eliminating Paul Harris Fellow recognition for restricted contributions to make it effective on July 1, 1997, not immediately as previously decided.
